Region One

Region One Update - Summer, 2009
The following is the year-end wrap up emailed to all Region One members and all club presidents.

Greetings Region One-ers!

It was a pleasure to get to visit with those of you who made it down to Cabo last week for the national convention. I realize that it isn’t a small thing to ask for you to take time away from your jobs and families to spend time with your brothers & sisters in 20-30. I hope you returned as re-energized as I am. Seeing the kids and staff at Casa Hogar reminded me of why we do what we do – to improve the quality of life for children in need. To educate and elevate the next generation of leaders and citizens.

I hope you were also able to create and strengthen friendships with members across the country and perhaps even make connections for joint projects or long-term support. We must work as one to advance the organization. As I’ve said before, the men and women of Active 20-30 are some of the brightest and most talented I’ve met. Let’s continue to share ideas and use each other’s strengths to advance our local and national organizations. Rusty asked each of the Directors to reflect on the past term including successes and things we’d like to have seen happen differently. Each of the Director’s letters are posted on the Active 20-30 Blog at: http://tickietackie.blogspot.com/2009/07/first-congratulations-to-your-new-board.html. The Region One letter is also attached for quick reference.

Shameless plug: The Active 20-30 Blog (formerly the Region One Blog) will be continuing. I’m always looking for projects and success stories to showcase and challenges to discuss. If you have thoughts or would like to guest blog, please let me know. Don’t forget to add to the conversation by commenting on existing blog posts. http://TickieTackie.blogspot.com

CONGRATULATIONS to Keith Engel
of Eugene #920 for his election as your next Region One Director. His term began at the installation dinner Saturday night and will continue through the Santa Rosa convention next summer. I couldn’t be happier to have him fill this role. He has many years of leadership experience in Active 20-30 and in his every day life. He’s chaired countless projects and served as president of his club, as well as lead the PR committee for the past 2 years. I’ve known Keith since early in my 20-30 membership and am honored to call him a friend. Please reach out to him with questions, for advice or just to say hello. His email is: Keith.engel@lile.net and cell is:  541.501.1239.

Finally, I’d like to thank you all for your support and enthusiasm over the past term. I truly appreciate the insight I’ve gained by serving on the board and working directly with club presidents, project chairs and members in general. I knew we had a fabulous group of people, but – wow – I continue to be amazed with the talent I discover in our ranks.

On a personal note…
For those of you who did not attend convention or who I didn’t have a chance to chat with Saturday night, I have thrown my hat into the ring for next year’s National President-Elect campaign. I welcome the opportunity to talk with you during the upcoming months about the future of Active 20-30, what our membership needs from the national organization and each other, as well as how we can bring more continuity to the organization between leaders.

Thanks again for a great year and here’s to many more to come. Cheers!
Trena

Greetings Region One! The last six months have gone by in a flash leaving so many memories behind to cherish. From NoCo #1040's S Suitcase Party to E Eugene #920's Duck Pen, ushering, and tree pickup, the clubs of Region One have been bringing in the bucks for the kids that need our help the most. M Many clubs have stepped up to donate their time to hands-on activities, such as Ft. Wayne #700's Christmas Party for kids surviving cancer, Indianapolis #1036's monthly events with children at risk, and Medford #133's participation with the Maslow Project.

This term has been an exciting one in terms of growth. Medford chartered last summer and is off to an exceptional start. They've been working hard to get their name out in the community to drive membership growth and financial support. The Eugene club deserves a thank you for taking them under their wing and offering guidance and support. The women of Rocky M Mountain #1042 chartered this past fall and are off to a phenomenal start with a strong membership base and their first major event – Polynesian Party – scheduled for this summer. Brentwood #1037 is in the process of re-chartering and could use the support of all of our clubs. Reach out to new and established clubs and see how you can work together.

I'd like to take a minute to also thank all of the Region One members who have stepped up to serve on and head national committees. Corey Arashiro (Indianapolis #1036) has been spearheading national sponsorship efforts and is laying the foundation for us to begin approaching corporations for support. Keith E Engel (Eugene #920) deserves a round of applause for leading the PR effort, creating media contact lists for each market we're in and are targeting, as well as engaging a team of members in creating press releases and educating clubs. Kudos to Andrea Aikman (Fort Wayne #700) for her work with WOCO this year, too. I know I'll miss committee members if I try to list them all, so please accept my thanks!

It's time to look ahead to next term – it'll be here before we know it. We are in need of a new Region One Director to take over at the end of June. Are you thinking about getting more involved? Looking for a way to shape the present and future of the organization? This has been a great way to see what goes on behind the scenes and make a real impact on some of our clubs and members. We have a lot of great leaders and potential leaders – is it your time to step up and represent our region on the national board? I'd love to spend a few minutes talking with you about the role.

Thanks for the continued hard work, time and energy each of you put in to better the lives of the children in our communities. Here's to continued success and friendship! Cheers!

2008 has been a fantastic year so far for Active 20-30. Under Frank's leadership, we received the Presidential Youth Service Award, designation as a Daily Point of Light, and multiple Congressional commendations. Region 1 has been shining as well.

As your Regional Director, I'm here for you in any way you need. For those I haven't had a chance to meet in person or by email, I look forward to the opportunity. My goal for the region this year is to bridge the communication gap we've experienced in years past. To keep up with the daily goings-on of Region 1 and the national association, I've created a blog: http://tickietackie.blogspot.com. Comment as you please - the more interaction and feedback, the better.

My phone and email are almost always on, so don't hesitate to reach out with questions, concerns, or ideas... or just to say hi. Cell: 317.418.4786; eMail: persephone.goddess @ gmail.com

On the national level, Corey Arashiro and Keith Engle have agreed to continue chairing the Sponsorship and PR committees respectively.  Thank you, boys!

Denver celebrated another successful fundraising event, the 21st Annual Denver Polo Classic.  This year, they brought together numerous teams of the highest caliber polo players in this half of the world to put on another great weekend event.  Over the three days, they entertained over 5,000 patrons, and raised close to $400,000 for Denver-area children's charities.  Brokers Benefiting Kids (Aug 23rd), which is a field day-type event for the competitive types in Denver's commercial real estate industry.  Over 40 companies will field teams to compete in such events as 3-on-3 basketball, ultimate Frisbee, and the always challenging obstacle course.  Although the teams have a lot of fun, we also hope to raise close to $300,000 for Denver-area children's charities.  2008 is shaping up to be a record year for the Denver club as they hope to raise $1 million for disadvantaged and at-risk children in the Denver metro area.

Eugene entertained 8 Scottish men from Round Table in Eugene prior to the WOCO Convention in Las Vegas. Their annual summer camping trip was well attended also. THe Em's Baseball Concession Stand project is in full swing and members are having fun as well as raising some funds for children along the way. The Oregon Duck Football "Duck Pen" bicycle parking project on the horizon and it will soon be time to start up Coats for Kids shortly after that. There are quite a few new members and everyone is thrilled to finally have another Club here in Oregon to partner with in the Medford Club. Eugene expects to raise about $10,000 with the Em's Concession Stand and the Freedom Festival (4th of July) raised about $15,000. The Eugene club currently boasts about 70 members and are always actively recruiting more.

Fort Wayne has kept busy with hands-on activities. On May 10th, fifteen children from the Boys and Girls Club joined club members at the Fort Wayne Children’s Zoo for a day of animal interaction and outdoor activities. The following Wednesday members met up with Big Brothers and Big Sisters for a fun-filled night of game. Hands-on events like these take place all year long and is open to both members and nonmembers.  Mark your calendars for Puttin' On The Rits, their annual black-tie fundraiser, held on the forst Saturday in March.

Indianapolis successfully completed the second annual Half Pint Challenge, sharing the proceeds with the Fort Wayne club. The men and women of Indy were joined by runners from Fort Wayne, Eugene and other clubs to run the largest half-marathon in the country while raising awareness of Active 20-30 and money for the children we all serve. This fall, the Indy club will host a Beers & Bears social to raise teddy bears for the Indianapolis Metro Police Department's Bears on Patrol program, as well as continue working hands-on with kids each month.

Medford Active 20-30 #133 currently has 10 active members, 3 applications to send in and a goal of total membership is 20 active members by the end of the year.  Chartered on June 28, 2008, this brand new club has hit the ground running! They've’ve held a Rummage Sale to raise $250 and donated to the Maslow Project which is a local resource center for homeless youth.  AThey are assisting the Maslow Project with their Kids Spree in August and CASA with a Celebrity Waiter fundraising event.  A park cleanup and social mixer are planned for later in the year.  Next year they hope to hold a golf tournament or bike-a-thon.

Northern Colorado held its 1st Annual Suitcase Party in September 2007. They raised over $90,000 for charitable partners such as the Boys and Girls Club and Partners Mentoring Youth.  The 1st Annual Christmas for Kids in December 2007 provided 50 kids $50 gift certificates at WalMart so they could buy gifts for their family.  This busy club also held its 1st Annual Golf Tourney raising over $7,500.  Our 2nd Annual Suitcase Party is planned for September 5th - http://www.noco2030.org/page/9/title/Suitcase%20Party/
