2010-2011 Region 1 News
National Director Region 1

2009-2010 Region 1 News
National Director Region 1

APRIL 2010
During this term I have been amazed at how much I've learned about what the Region 1 Clubs have been doing to help children in their communities and how their members have been developing leadership skills along the way. The Clubs in Region 1 are very diverse and each has taken the mission statement and interpreted it in their own way. The largest obstacle for our Region is to overcome the distance between our clubs but with the popularity of Facebook and other social networking websites, physical distances are shrinking in the virtual world.
First, I want to give a very large shout out to the Brentwood #1037 Club for their warm welcome and hospitality. Five Club members travelled to New York in March to attend Brentwood’s 5th anniversary and installation for their first out-of-town visitors since their charter night. We were thrilled to learn that they have committed to sponsor another club in the coming year in NYC. We have friends in New York and we should continue to build on this trip to support our brothers and sisters.
The Region 1 Meeting is coming up quickly, the weekend of May 14th in Denver. Look to the Facebook event page for the most up-to-date information. The meeting is a great opportunity for the three Colorado clubs to network together and learn more about everything that Active 20-30 has to offer. Thank you to Rocky Mountain #1042 and Denver #390 for agreeing to host and hammer out the details.
The Indiana clubs are still going strong—with Ft. Wayne #700 “Putting on the Ritz” being a great success by all accounts, and the Indianapolis #1036 Half Pint Marathon Fundraiser coming up in early May. The men of Topeka #524 are holding steady at 50+ members and continue to be our beacon in the Mid-West.
Thank you to my own club, Eugene #920, for continued support and volunteer chaperones to keep me out of trouble as I travel. Being a member of the Eugene club is more like joining a boot camp for volunteerism—with the opportunities to donate time often outnumbering the days of the week.
Medford #133 shines as a textbook example of how to successfully charter a club and make an impact in your community in a short period of time.
I know I am long-winded so I will wrap this up. If you have not visited a Region 1 club, put it on your bucket list before you age out!
SEPTEMBER 2009 Hello from Eugene! I have been thinking about serving Region 1 and the national organization as a director for some time and I’m excited about this coming year. President Evan has set some ambitious goals and expectations of the board and the national committee chairs over the coming months.
Region 1 stretches from coast to coast and many of the clubs in our region are used to being hundreds of miles from their nearest club. Over the past few years this has changed with Colorado now home to three clubs and Oregon set to add its third club with the re-charter of the Portland club in the coming months. Growth and expansion within Region 1 is personal goals of mine as well as promoting inter-club support and visitation.
In late August I visited Colorado and attended the Northern Colorado Active 20-30 Club’s Suitcase Party. In its third year, this club has developed a fantastic gala event that rose over $100 K in a single night! In attendance with me were members from the Rocky Mountain 20-30 Club who are close to celebrating their first year. I’m hopeful that in the coming months these two clubs along with the Denver 20-30 Club can network together to find ways to help each other succeed and raise money to help children.
The Indiana clubs both are on track to have another successful year. Indianapolis #1020 hosted their second “Beers for Bears” event to collect teddy bears to be handed out to children involved with traumatic events by the city’s police department. Indy club president Chad Arashiro has a goal of promoting growth of 20-30 in their state in the near future. The Brentwood, NY 20-30 club has hit the ground running with a event this year called “Festival Centroa” in September that they expect to be attended by over 50,000. The 10 men who are members of this club have been working tirelessly to raise money for children and have been successful even though they are so isolated from the rest of our organization.
Of course, our Oregon clubs have been busy with projects and we have been enjoying having other 20-30 clubs within just a few hours drive. The clubs in Medford, Eugene, and in a few months Portland have quickly established a good relationship with each other to everyone’s benefit.
Before the next newsletter comes out I hope to have travelled to Indiana and Kansas to visit our clubs there in person and get to see old friends and make new ones. If there is anything I can do support you please let me know. Thank you again for allowing me the opportunity to represent Region 1 and serve on the National board this year.
