May 1st, 2001

I’m back . . . Yes, Steve Johnson is back and running once again for National President-Elect. After last year’s close election for President-Elect in which I lost to Scott Balzer (our current National President-Elect), I am back again asking for your support and your vote on June 22nd, 2001 at the Active 20-30 National Convention in Reno, Nevada.

During the previous year since I ceased being the National Director for Region #2 (Northern & Central California and Nevada), I have obtained a unique insight into how the National Association works and more importantly . . . how it does not work. The change of perspective is like once being in the center of a whirlwind and later standing a mile away, watching that same whirlwind move across the landscape. I have seen how the National Association has incredible resources to effect positive changes for our members and how often that change fails to occur.

The issues and challenges before Active20-30 are much the same as last year. I have outlined these issues below:

1. We lack a strong national identity, despite the fact that we have a forceful and inspiring mission statement. Everything we do should support Active 20-30's goal of assistance to special needs children and efforts to encourage personal growth in our members.

2. Few clubs participate in our national project (Mervyns's Child Spree) and this national project does more to promote Mervyns's than Active 20-30. We need a National Project that supports the Mission Statement, " . . . improving the quality of life for the special needs children in our communities."

3. Despite several promising new club prospects and localized growth in certain existing clubs, few new clubs are being formed and Active 20-30 is still experiencing declining or stagnant membership. There is not a community in North America that wouldn’t look at your membership and want to have that sort of enthusiasm in their community. And there is not a community that once had an Active 20-30 club that would want to see that sort of enthusiasm return. This is the untapped resource that Active 20-30 must utilize to grow and thrive in the 21st Century.

4. Our national newsletter is insufficient in size or content to serve as a means to interconnect the clubs across North America into a unified organization. The newsletter must serve as a sounding board for members with questions and a communication tool between clubs across North America. Our strength is in our members and in their ideas. Let’s re-design the newsletter to take advantage of it as a communication tool for ALL clubs in Active 20-30.

The National Association should be the tool, the "glue" that brings all Active 20-30 together for a collective purpose. It is the concept of "the sum of the whole is greater than the individual parts." Active 20-30 has the means and the energy to solve these problems. I have ideas on how to turn these issues into opportunities. I will be expanding these ideas and sharing them more fully with you over the next eight weeks prior to the elections.

It’s time for great things to happen! I hope you will help me make them happen by electing me as you National President-Elect on June 22nd.
Sincerely,

Steven Johnson

Hello everyone from lovely Manhattan Beach.

I'm your current Region #3 National Director and past-president of both the Inglewood and South Bay clubs. Our club is the second oldest continuous charter in 20-30. Besides having held every other office in my club I have been in Active 20/30 for 14 years. I'm 39 years old and have been in Dental practice for 14 years as well. After being a regional director I feel my experience and leadership down here in region #3 has given me what it's going to take to lead Active 20/30 as President in the next year to come. In my term alone region #3 has grown in membership as well as Chartering 2 new clubs.

My mission is going to be to strengthen our existing clubs as make Active 20/30 a nationally known organization.
I'm looking for all of your support in my campaign as the choice for me is the choice for experience in leadership.
I thank you all once again.
See you in Reno!!
