Brothers and Sisters in Active 20-30,
Another month, another newsletter... It's so incredible to have this consistent point of communication, connecting the National Organization! Samantha and her PR Committee has been working hard to put out content that will appeal to each and every club. If you have any ideas for new sections or content, please don't hesitate to reach out!
This has been a busy month, with work at an annual hectic peak and 20-30 travel/meetings pulling me onto the road once more. I recently had the pleasure of visiting the Arizona clubs, enjoying a happy hour with VOS/Scottsdale and a bowling fundraiser with Tuscon and Southern Arizona. It was great to speak with these clubs, so far removed from the hub that is Northern California/Nevada, hearing about the unique way they interpret the 20-30 mission and raise fantastic amounts of money for local youth. Hopefully there is a new national fundraising concept in the works, tied directly to the meetings of that fun weekend!
I also had a chance to meet with members of both the NYC and Brentwood, NY clubs. Small but mighty, both clubs are strong, making new connections and growing their local presence. Brentwood increased the number of children they serve at Children's Shopping Spree by FIVE TIMES! So impressive for a small club!
NYC made a fantastic partnership with a local shelter for women of domestic violence. This opportunity may lead to a priceless photo op with a local politician. Fingers crossed that this connection opens many doors for them!
I'm learning so much as I visit the member clubs. Thank you all for hosting me and for taking the time out of your busy schedules to introduce me to the inner workings of your unique group. I truly believe that we can all learn from each other. No one club does everything perfectly. It's great to take simple ideas from each club and apply those ideas to my local clubs. While we all operate independently, we are certainly more connected than we realize.

Get to know your National Committees: Will be sharing with you who are committees are and what they are doing.
National PR Committee:
The Public Relations Committee is formed with members in five out of the six regions, with almost two members from every region. Members on this committee help National stay connected to the regions. We would appreciate having another member of region six join us and two members from region five join us. The contributing members in this committee are listed below, and a photo is located at the bottom of every newsletter:

The National PR Committee Chair is Samantha Klein. Samantha is a member of Active 20-30 Redding #143 and served on the Redding board for the last three years. Samantha has chaired and co-chaired multiple events since joining the Redding team. Samantha was assigned the position of PR Chair during the AGM in July of this year. This committee is responsible for the PR Grant, The Active Twenty-Thirtain Newsletter, assisting the Website committee with a photo challenge, and serving as a co-chair to the New Charter Committee’s Video project.
The newest announcement of the PR Committee was creating a National Brochure. The National Brochure is located below for members to print and use as needed. Our hope with the National Brochure is to help spread the word, gain members and help the community see the success of this organization.

I recently had the pleasure of visiting Tucson Club #82, along with National President, Dana Von Sternberg, Santa Rosa #50 Club President, Jeff Okrepkie, Sara Schmillen and Ashley Corbett, both of VOS #1028. During our visit, we attended a fundraising event hosted by the Tucson Club, Pins for Pals. Proceeds from the bowling event benefitted Therapeutic Ranch for Animals and Kids (“TRAK”). TRAK focuses on strengthening children and community through animal interaction. Pins for Pals is just one of several of the fundraising events the Tucson club hosts annually. Over the last year, the Tucson club has focused their efforts on both fundraising and recruitment of new members and have successfully doubled their membership base.
During my time with the men of Tucson 20-30, I was reminded of the importance of supporting clubs within the region and around the country. We were able to make new friends, learn more about the culture of the Tucson Club, the issues the Club has faced and have overcome. These were things that could not be experienced over email or phone conversations. Through Club visitations, we can learn from one another, share ideas and better our own clubs through the knowledge gained. I challenge each of you to visit a new club this year and get to know your fellow members!

B. National Convention – Valley of the Sun, #1028

Active 20-30 Clubs of Phoenix, Scottsdale and Valley of the Sun are excited to host the 2016 National Convention in sunny Scottsdale, Arizona! In each month's newsletter we will highlight something new we have planned for you. In last month’s Active Twenty-Thirtian newsletter we talked about the OPTIONAL pre-convention float down the Lower Salt River. So, what are we talking about this month? The Convention’s opening event, Top Golf!
For those unfamiliar, Top Golf has taken the nation by storm by offering two of everybody’s favorite things – golf AND cold drinks. No cart lady required and no need to bring your own clubs. Rob Sorensen - Active 20-30 Club of Chico #100
Pregnancy Announcement!!
Welcome us in congratulating Rob 'Tuxspeedo' Sorensen club member of Chico #100 and his wife Quilla Sorensen for their growing Family. Quilla is 16 weeks pregnant, and her and Robert are very excited to meet their new addition. Rob and Quilla met at LaSalles bar, in Chico on 80's night three years ago after a mutual friend’s wedding. Mr & Mrs. Sorensen have been together since October 12th, 2012. We look forward to highlighting you both in April as the baby is due to arrive on March 19th, 2016!

Vanessa Norgauer – Active 20-30 Member Goldrush #1034
In fall of 2013, just before Sly Park Lake closed for the season, an 8 year old boy went missing and drowned just feet from his father and 4 year old sister. He was not wearing a life jacket. The little boy and his family lived next door to the family of one of the Gold Rush members, and at our meeting we discussed the incident and what we could do to help the family. At one point, I suggested that maybe we try to erect a life jacket station at Sly Park Lake in his honor. Knowing many people involved in the Scouting community, I suggested that maybe we partner with a local Boy Scout who might be in the process of earning his Eagle Scout award. I contacted the local Scout Council, and while they were very excited about the opportunity to help, had no one take them up on the suggestion. The Gold Rush club tried to come up with ways to do the life jacket station on our own, and just didn't have the resources to make it happen. We really believed that the project was dead, that is until Kayla Grissom, a local Girl Scout, approached us about partnering with us so she could complete her Gold Award (which is the Girl Scout equivalent to the Eagle Scout Award). Over the next 9 months, we met with Kayla often worked with her and El Dorado Irrigation District (the governing board for Sly Park) and the Board of Supervisors for El Dorado County to work our design and logistics of how the station would work. Gold Rush donated 60 life jackets, and El Dorado Irrigation stepped up to do a check out process of the life jackets and Kayla erected an informational board at the lake. There has been such an overwhelming response, El Dorado Irrigation District has asked for an additional 30 life jackets because most weekends they check them all out. The plan is to erect more stations to bring even more awareness of child water safety. We have been featured on Good Day Sacramento, CBS evening news in Sacramento and will have a feature article in the Mountain Democrat the week of 9/20. We couldn't be more proud of the life-saving impact our club has had on the children in our community.

My favorite hands on event is our annual back to school shopping event, Kidspree, which is held every August in partnership with Scottsdale Active 20-30 Club. For the last two decades, we have taken children from Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Scottsdale shopping at a local Kohls where they pick out clothing necessities so they can start the school year off on the right foot.
Last year at a VOS 20-30 General meeting, I asked a member of the Boys & Girls Clubs, 18 year-old Dahlia Jimeniz, to speak to our members about her experience at the Boys & Girls Clubs and, specifically, the annual back to school shopping event. During her presentation, Dahlia shared that she had been part of the Kidspree event every year of her childhood. Her parents ran a fruit stand at a local swap meet and they could not afford to buy clothing and other essentials for her and her siblings so they relied heavily on this event to ensure she had necessities she needed to start the school year.
Dahlia shared with our members that there was one year, in particular, that stood out to her and will remain forever engrained her in memory. During this shopping trip, Dahlia told us that her 20-30 shopping buddy that took her shopping said she would buy her a watch if she promised to stay in school and go to college. Dahlia was so overwhelmed by the generosity of her 20-30 shopping partner that she kept her watch as a reminder to stay in school long after the battery died years ago. During her presentation to our members, Dahlia proudly announced to us that she was recently accepted to ASU for the engineering program. Dahlia told us that she never forgot the promise she made to the VOS 20-30 member over a decade ago and credits that day and the purchase of the watch to her successes. This story is a reminder that even the smallest act of kindness can change the course of someone’s life for the better.

Robert Steck - Active 20-30 Club of Eugene #920
Title/Company: Director of Technology/Partnered Solutions IT
Since joining the Active 20-30 Club in 2011, Robert's business has grown from three employees to over 10 employees. Robert says that the leadership skills of running a business are a lot different than being the President of the Eugene Active 20-30 Club. In the Club, he works with a lot of different people from various backgrounds versus running a business where he is in charge of selecting his employees. This difference has been a great learning experience for Robert as it has provided him with new leadership experiences and abilities. Robert started his company with no real goal of having more than just a few employees and staying small-scale, more like a freelancer. But over the last year as he has run the chairs of his local 20-30 Club, he has grown his business. It may be opportunity, it may be the growth of his leadership experience, or it might just be his ego. Whatever the case may be, one thing he knows for sure is that 20-30 Club has some part to his success.
Partnered Solutions IT sets itself apart from others in the same field by being heavily involved in the local community. Some examples include donating equipment, resources, money, and labor to the Active 20-30 Club and other local non-profits. They also employ and provide internships to young students and workers looking to start a career in technology. Partnered Solutions IT is committed to helping the growth of the local technology community by being involved with the Oregon Technology Association, the local chamber, and the local city government. Robert can also be found speaking at local high schools and judging high school and/or college technology competitions.
While Robert is very dedicated to his business and the 20-30 Club, he also makes time for his partner Amanda and his three-year-old daughter Colette. Robert says that without these two amazing people to help keep him grounded, he wouldn’t be who he is today. Robert met Amanda through the 20-30 Club (and the story goes that he wanted to date the best looking lady in the Eugene Club). Colette can also be found at various 20-30 Club events and even has a 20-30 Club hoodie that says, “Future Member.”

Mr. Thomas Lawrence Lovell “Poo Bucket" Active 20-30 Club of Carson Valley #85
It was the summer of 2006 and I wasn’t even a full-fledged red vest. Which is to say I had a vest, but no patch or been thru initiation. At the time I drove a black Camaro that lacked functioning air conditioning. That, coupled with the fact that I don’t live in that shithole Bakersfield meant I had the habit of safely leaving my windows down. I was warned by older members Fish Guts & Rev, however, that this was not a smart practice and that if I continued to do so I would be, and I quote, ‘f**k** with’. Being that I was barely 21 years of age I did not take heed to this warning.
It is well known in Region 4 that the last people you want to steal your shit is Carson Valley. Because we don’t fu** around up here. When we steal your stuff you’re paying the iron price to get those items back. No crying to any Ivory Towers here. And by the way that never gets old, a grown man, soon to be a father, cried that his banner got stolen. What a f**k*** joke. But I digress…
As it turns out, during the aforementioned summer of 2006 CV85 came into possession of the Reno #8 bell. Our President sent word that they needed to attend a Wednesday night meeting to retrieve their property. So the club from a city of over 200,000 sent two women to attend our meeting. Because as we all know, no real men join Reno #8. So these two women attended our meeting. And sat thru the entire meeting in scared silence. Why is this? Because at the base of the stairs to our clubhouse sat a trailer full of fresh cow manure. More accurately; dripping wet cow shit. They were informed they must dig out the stolen goods from the cow sh**, using shovels and gloves they purchased from us for $20 a person.
So for the next half hour these women had to sift thru a trailer of horse sh*t. It was then that our president remembered that the bell had been frozen in a five gallon bucket that was underneath the trailer. After chipping the bell out of the ice the bell was returned. Since then we have made people dig into rabbit guts, bob for condom covered bananas, reach into sheep intestines mixed with rotten produce and those are just a few.
Anyways as the new guy I had to ride shotgun to tow and help drop off the trailer of cow sh**. By the time I got back to the clubhouse everyone had left for a bar a few blocks away. I had to work early the next morning so I got in my black Camaro and drove home. At 5:30 the next morning I noticed something in the backseat. Those windows I had been warned to keep rolled up? That 5 gallon bucket used to freeze the bell? It had been filled with cow sh*t and placed in my backseat because I left my windows down. And that, ladies and gentlemen is how I got the name Poo Bucket.

Connie Perkins – Active 20-30 Club of Greater Sacramento #1032
Connie Perkins is being recognized as a Past Active Life member. Connie has been a member of the Active 20-30 Club of Greater Sacramento since May of 2000 (13 Years).
Connie served in multiple positions as an active member including; #1032 Director, Secretary, Vice President, and President. Connie even served on the national board as the National Region 2 Director. Connie had the opportunity to chair the Crab Feed in 2011 and the Anniversary Brunch in 2008.
Connie said her most memorable moment since joining the Active 20-30 Family was the Children’s Shopping Spree and the friends that she has made over the years.
Thank you Connie for all your hard work!

National Association of United States and Canada:
I would like to begin by thanking God for the opportunity to share my experience in Active 20-30 International with your national association. Likewise, I would like to thank the National Association of US and Canada for all the support I have always received from its leaders and members at large. Please know that you have all the backing of Active 20-30 International and myself as International President to continue to strengthen your National Association, which is the birthplace of our organization and as such has paved the way for thousands of people to live Active 20-30.
You have given my home club David, Panama, the National Association of Panama and me the best advice and I am truly grateful to you for entrusting me with the leadership of our international organization.
As leaders in service we need to feel inspired constantly. I share with you a beautiful quote from Mother Theresa that has helped me continue our work despite difficult times:
“The fruit of Silence is prayer. The fruit of Prayer is faith. The fruit of Faith is love. The fruit of Love is service. The fruit of Service is peace.”
My source of inspiration is every activity developed for our children by you, the pillars of Active 20-30. Leading an organization such as Active 20-30 International requires dedication, time and sacrifice but also love for our children. When I think of every struggling child in our communities and what our work does to change their lives I am filled with unexplainable strength to continue. I know that there are hundreds of young men and women who share my passion to offer sincere service to Active 20-30 and I am further invigorated; I know that in every one of your hearts runs the blood of service and that you too, are filled with the same emotions I encounter when I see a child smile.
As we continue to be inspired our saw keeps moving and we continue to reach new places around the world. During this administrative period we will be expanding to open the National Association of Ecuador, which the National Past-President Corey Arashiro supported when he attended the chartering of the first club in the country last April 2014 in Guayaquil, Ecuador. We invite all of you to continue to support this international effort.
Likewise we invite you to participate in the International Midterm to be held on January 30th, 2016 in the Dominican Republic and the International Convention to be held from July 13-17 in Guadalajara, Mexico. Together we will be able to strengthen our bonds of friendships in service under the flag of Active 20-30 International.
I exhort every member of this prestigious organization to continue to brace the values of humbleness, gratitude, tolerance and love that are the basis for the work that we do in our communities and that help us serve the way that only 20-30ians know.
A great friend in Active 20-30 asked me to sumarize in 140 characters my contribution to Active 20-30 International, to which I responded:
“We will strengthen history, mysiticism and philosophy in Active 20-30 through service, while sharing our lifestyle in cities worldwide.”
“To serve in Active 20-30 is my passion.”

Brothers and sisters in Active 20-30,
I send you a warm hug and my best greetings from our Caribbean island. I am more than proud to belong to this great family.
I invite you to forget about the language barriers, and to come and share with us and the rest of our brotherly countries at the next International Midterm, which will be celebrated in our dear Dominican Republic, land of Merengue and Bachata, beautiful beaches, joyful people and much more. We are going to demonstrate once again the camaraderie and the personal warmth that characterizes us.
I hope we can continue to work to improve our organization, fulfilling our objectives, especially with sincere service offered by people who want and fight for a better society, offering their time, effort and dedication in exchange for a much more powerful motivation: a child’s smile.
You can always count on having the support of our Association, and rest assured that this Buzz Saw in the middle of the Caribbean will always be moving, and that in this land that we called “Quisqueya the Beautiful” you have 250 brothers and sisters that will welcome you with open arms.
