Buzzsaw Spotlight: Mike Nohrenberg, Eugene #920 “A life that Lit Up the Sky”
Active 20-30 is a family. When one heart bleeds, all of our hearts bleed. Our inaugural Buzzsaw Spotlight is Lifetime Member of Eugene #920 and former National President of Active 20-30 US & Canada, Mike “Boom Boom” Nohrenberg. Mike passed away in late February from cancer and our committee would like to dedicate this first issue of the Twenty Thirtian to him. Mike is an icon in the Eugene community. He has served our organization for many years at the local, regional and National level, building his life around community service. He is most well-known for his 30-year involvement in the annual 4th of July Fireworks celebration in Eugene. Mike first joined Active 20-30 to participate in this event, earning him the nickname “Boom Boom.” A local news station, KEZI, sat down with Mike and his wife LaVena Nohrenberg to reflect on his life. The piece is a beautiful depiction of Mike’s passion and dedication to lighting up people’s lives. You can view it here. Mike’s impact was much greater than the work he did locally and the ripples from his efforts have spread throughout our international organization and have made a positive impact on so many members. As a tribute to his hard work and love for the community, Active 20-30 members and friends came together to put on a farewell fireworks show outside of his home. In addition to his work in Active 20-30, Mike was an avid Oregon Ducks fan and a strong supporter of an organization called Donate Life. In 1998, he received a kidney and pancreas donation through Donate Life that saved his life. Mike said “I got 16 and a half additional years to watch my kids grow up, to get to meet and hold my grandsons that I wouldn’t of had, had it not been for the donor.” LaVena relayed that “he hopes other people will think about the legacy they can leave when they die.” Mike, of course, planned to donate his viable organs upon passing - a final selfless gesture from an endlessly generous man. International President, Evan Hershey asks that we “give thanks to our brother in Active 20-30 for his service to our great organization and his dedication to enhancing the lives of children, not only in Eugene, but throughout our largest national association.” He also has conferred Honorary Membership upon Mike’s children Sarah, Branden and Ryan in recognition of the dedicated service and efforts put forth by their father. We thank Mike for his service in Active 20-30 and we will always remember him for his selflessness and generosity. He will be greatly missed. Fellow Active 20-30 member, Kathy Jo Leom put it so gracefully, “Anytime I see fireworks, I will think of him, because he is Boom Boom.” Mike’s family requests that any donations be sent to Active 20-30 Eugene or Donate Life Northwest.
Welcome our Newest Members! “Youth, to be served, must serve.” We would like to welcome the following members to the Active 20-30 family! Thank you for supporting the work that we do.
