A Tale of 2 Clubs: 20/30-somethings, Boys and Girls
New Healdsburg Active 20-30 Club gives $2,000 gift to Healdsburg Boys and Girls Club at Christmas party.
Kids at the Healdsburg Boys and Girls Club didn't care that the $2,000 check they received Friday was bigger than they were.
At least four of them grabbed the large cardboard gift and held it up proudly for a photo op at the club's annual Christmas party.
"We are changing kids lives here every day," said Emilie King, director of the Boys and Girls Club, which serves at least 140 children and youth on a regular basis. "The money will go to all sorts of programs, supplies and staff."
Dan Chapin, president of the newly chartered Healdsburg chapter of Active 20-30 Club, said his club raised the money at their "Bottle Shots" event in October.
"The club was originally formed in 1940, then it dissolved in 1976," Chapin said. "We resurrected it this year -- we were chartered on Nov. 12."
Amanda Erlendson, 20-30 Club secretary, said the club has 13 members so far, and they are actively recruiting on their Facebook page. Erlendson, who was a volunteer server at the Healdsburg Rotary Club Crab Feed this month, said the 20-30 Club is a younger version of Rotary.
"We've been blessed by the Healdsburg Rotary," Chapin said. "They want young people like us to learn how to take leadership roles in the community and then be able to become the next generation of leaders."
Christina Foppoli, club vice president, said she is from the Windsor and Santa Rosa areas, but chose the Healdsburg club over 20-30 clubs further south because the Healdsburg group emphasizes service.
"I just wanted to get involved in something that had more of a service aspect than a social aspect," Foppoli said. "That's what interests me personally."
Other gifts at Friday's Christmas party came from Boys and Girls Club volunteers and from community donations, King said.
"We just try to make sure they leave here with academic success," King said of the Boys and Girls Club programs. "We try to teach them skills in character-building, leadership and healthy lifestyles."
Healdsburg Boys and Girls Club is one of 10 members of the Boys and Girls Clubs of Central Sonoma County, which serves over 1,200 children throughout the region, according to Parke Hafner, chairman of the group's community council.
