A ObesoTO:  Active 20-30 Members and Friends,

It is with a heavy heart that I announce the untimely death of Arnold “the Bear” Obeso, who died of a heart attack on Sunday, January 4, 2009.

Arnold was an irreplaceable member of the Calexico-Border Bandits #427 and proudly represented Active 20-30 US & Canada abroad for many years.  His selfless commitment to this organization will be sorely missed.  For me to say he was a great member would be doing his memory an injustice.  Arnold had one of the biggest hearts I had the privilege to experience.  He cared about everyone and everything, and was a very giving person.

To me, he was one of the “good guys,” the smile at the end of the bar, the warm embrace, and the security of knowing he had my back. He was my beer buddy, my body guard, my translator, but most of all he was my loyal friend.  We cried together in a children’s ward in the Dominican Republic, we laughed and partied at WOCO in Costa Rica, and he was one of the first to hug me when I won the Manuel Molina Award. It will never be the same when I set foot abroad knowing that he will not be there to greet me with “how you doing Bro’?”

He would want you to know how great this organization is and that he would not have had the opportunity to make the incredible number of friends that he made if he hadn’t been involved with Active 20-30.  He would encourage everyone to get involved, make new friends and make a difference.  He loved this organization and everyone in it.

I encourage everyone to reach out to Arnold’s brother Efren and to the Calexico-Border Bandits #427.  They have lost one of the great ones.  (Calexico-Border Bandits #427, P. O. Box 1011, Calexico, CA  92231)

It has been said that a person is not judged by how well he or she lives, but by how well others live because of them. One of the real joys to Arnold was to see a child smile, so simple.  I would ask that every member of our organization Active and Past Active, take a moment in the next few days to make a difference in a child’s life, make a child smile in memory of Arnold Obeso. I can think of no bigger honor.  When a heart as big as his stops, the world stops, if only for a moment.  Arnold left this world in much better shape than when he came into it, and it is an honor and privilege to call him my friend. I will miss him.

God Bless you all and take care of yourselves.
